To recover from a burnout, experts agree that it can take between 12 and 16 weeks, but for many people, this can take much longer, and relapses are always a possibility. The badest the burnout is, the longer it will take to recover from it!
Obviously, each situation is unique and your specific case may be more or less far from these two extremes. For me, it took a year just to regain a semblance of physical and mental health, and even two years, the time to feel fully functional in my job.
Even if the burnout recovery time can vary from one person to another, here are some elements that could accelerate or slow down the healing of this unfortunate event of your life.
- First, there is medication. Anti-depressants are essential to your recovery because they facilitate the passage of happiness hormones in the brain. You may not realize it right away, but over time, your happiness pills will help you through.
- Medication alone is not the answer to everything. If you don't change the stressful environment that led you to burnout, even if you have access to the best medication, it won't be effective if you stay in your stressful environment. So don't be ashame, it's time to rethink your life!
- Working on your mindset is also important. At this point, you may still be struggling to understand what happened to you. This period of forced rest can be an excellent opportunity to take stock of your life. Are you really in the right place? Is this where you saw yourself as a child? Is this the best job for you? Are you in a toxic work environment? What would you like to do? What do you no longer enjoy doing? Why did this burnout happen in your life?
- Everything you can do to work on the inner peace you need for relaxing and not letting the stress take control of your life: sports, meditation, breathing, massages, warm bath, discussions with friends and loved ones, etc. Anything that does you good, is good for the brain!
